About the brand｜ゾディアック

1882年、スイスのル・ロックル。アリエル・ジャコが創業した工房が、ゾディアックの始まりです。社名が「ゾディアック（黄道十二宮）」として定まったのは1908年のこと。星座になぞらえた名は、当時としては大胆な選択でした。

同社の名を決定づけたのは、ダイバーズウォッチ「シーウルフ」です。ブランドは1953年の登場を公称しますが、実際に確認できる広告は1957年のもの。いずれにせよ、潜水用の腕時計がまだ数えるほどしかなかった時代に、回転ベゼルと高い防水性能を備えた一本を世に出したことに変わりはありません。

1970年代のクォーツショックで経営は傾き、ブランドは何度も持ち主を変えました。現在はフォッシルグループの傘下で、シーウルフを軸に復刻を続けています。ヴィンテージの個体は、アストログラフィックやシーウルフを中心に、独特の色使いとケースデザインで根強い人気があります。

"36,000" is printed proudly on the dial: ten beats per second, and the accuracy a very high-frequency movement makes possible. The smooth track of the hand across a calm dial is one of the defining sights of the golden age of mechanical watches.

— The dignity of a chronometer —

Fine vertical brushing radiates from the centre of the dial, with raised baton markers and sharp pencil hands sharpening the whole. A bearing worthy of "OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER", and untouched by its decades.

— A quiet witness —

The beautifully finished in-house high-beat calibre ZODIAC 78-79. Inside the case are the marks left by the watchmakers of the day and careful perlage decoration. Half a century on, the beat is as steady as ever.
