CITIZEN New Master 22, cal. 1802

— Deep blue, and an afterimage of the 1970s —

The New Master 22 was released by Citizen during the heat of Japan's growth years. The "22" on the dial worked rather like a series number within the range of the time.

What takes the eye first is a navy blue dial like deep water. A sunray finish that changes with the light, overlaid with raised markers cut like gemstones, gives the wrist an intelligent rhythm.

— A movement descended from the Homer —

At its heart is the 21-jewel hand-wound calibre 1802, directly descended from the Homer — the model once issued to Japanese National Railways staff.

"CITIZEN HOMER" is stamped proudly on the plain main plate, and nearly fifty years later it is still keeping strong, accurate time. Citizen's practical philosophy is concentrated inside this slim case.

— An export specification —

"WATER PROOF" printed in English on the dial suggests this example was built for export: domestic Citizen watches of the period used the company's own term, "PARA WATER". The difference is a small but genuinely interesting reflection of its time.

— Vintage that still fits —

A 35mm stainless case sits naturally under a modern cuff, and the cyclops lens over the date means the watch has not forgotten its job as an instrument either.
