Royal Oak prices generally have risen sharply in recent years, and this is a piece with real promise as an asset.

The Royal Oak Dual Time exists in older and newer versions, differing in dial design and buckle shape.

The older version has a smaller grande tapisserie pattern on the dial, Arabic numerals on the power reserve, and a buckle that is not an AP buckle.

The newer version has a larger grande tapisserie, no Arabic numerals on the power reserve, and an AP buckle.

This example is the newer version.

As you will know, the Royal Oak was designed by the late Gérald Genta.

It is generally thought to take the octagonal portholes of the British warship HMS Royal Oak as its motif, and because Audemars Piguet itself has cited the story of that ship, the idea became widely known.

The designer Gérald Genta, however, said the motif was a diving helmet.

Linking a grand story to a design written into watch history may fairly be called Audemars Piguet's own staging.
