CITIZEN Extra Flat, 1950s

— Slimness as a statement —

The 1950s, when the Japanese watch industry was making its first determined steps towards the world. "CITIZEN EXTRA FLAT" printed proudly on the dial is one sign of it: a slim watch built with the best technique available, and a piece of status at a gentleman's cuff.

— A face of its own —

The soft ageing across the dial is the work of years alone. On a surface turned pale ivory, gold markers and a raised C mark draw a handsome contrast.

There is a small seconds at six, while the case back is stamped "CENTER-SECOND" — which suggests either a transitional specification of the period or a case combined at some point during past servicing. Either way it is the kind of history that belongs to vintage watches.

A beautifully finished 17-jewel movement. Every turn of the crown sends a comfortable beat back through the fingers — a human warmth and a real technique that current watches do not have, and it is still keeping good time.
