— Carrying the breath of its own era —
The Bulova MIL-W-3818A was born in the 1950s at the request of the US Army.
A black dial and an unadorned layout. Fully burnt luminous indexes and hour and minute hands. An oversized crown so the watch could be operated with gloves on, in the field.
Every decision here put battlefield usability first — and that is exactly why the character is so strong.
A 1950s US Army issue mil-spec Bulova, MIL-W-3818A. Burnt lume against a black dial: functional beauty in its military form. Fitted with the respected Cal.10BNCH, including a hacking (seconds-stop) function. Military markings on the caseback and a large crown give the history a real, physical texture.
— The hacking function, a mark of military specification —
The movement is the well-regarded Cal.10BNCH: a solid, unfussy build with thick components, an indirect centre-seconds design driven off an intermediate wheel.
Pull the crown and the seconds hand stops — a hacking function, specified so that time could be set precisely for operations. Together with the sure feel of the manual winding, the construction still tells you what this watch was for.
— Proof of issue, on the caseback —
The codes struck into the caseback are the evidence that this particular watch was once issued government property.
At 32mm the case is small and easy to wear today — understated, yet with a definite presence on the wrist.
