A very rare 1950s Gallet manual-wind alarm watch has arrived.
Gallet was renowned as a maker of the finest chronographs, but it rode the alarm watch boom then sweeping America and released this model using an A. Schild calibre.
Given that Gallet was concentrating on chronographs at the time, production numbers must have been very small indeed.
The case surface is plated, so scratches cannot be hidden by polishing — which makes this an unpolished example in good condition.
At 36mm it could hardly sit badly on the wrist.
The dial has Arabic numerals at twelve, three, six and nine, with simple baton hour markers between them.
A fourth hand with a red tip, indicating the alarm time, stands out against the pure white dial.
Look closely at the brand's "G" logo and you will find hands drawn pointing to 2:50 — a feature no other model has.
Two crowns are fitted on the right of the case: the one at two winds and sets the alarm, and the one at four winds and sets the time.
Just the other day, Breitling announced the acquisition of Gallet, following Universal Genève.
It is to be developed as an entry-level brand within the Breitling group.
What happens next remains to be seen.
