— Why the half hunter was chosen —

In the 1930s, as the pocket watch gave way to the wristwatch, the half hunter was a special form born for gentlemen of standing.

A construction that protects the glass with a cover while letting the time be read quickly through a window was ideal for bankers, lawyers and diplomats who wanted to avoid any wasted movement in a meeting or a social setting.

At the same time, showing the beauty of a solid gold case on the outside made it strongly favoured by men of property and old families who valued formality.

Even at the end of the pocket watch era, there were those who would not let go of tradition and wanted both elegance of manner and real usefulness.

The half hunter existed to answer exactly that desire.

The movement, Cal. VC 426, embodies the ideal of the small, fine calibre that Vacheron Constantin pursued through the 1930s and 40s.

Within a modest 9.75-ligne diameter sit a distinctive stepped bridge construction and a projecting balance cock, with classical aesthetics and working accuracy quietly coexisting.

The layout of the train is finely judged, the bevelling and the blued screws carry the hand of a craftsman of the period, and the calibre served as a staging point that refined the plainness of its predecessor, the Cal.409.

The core of the design thinking later carried into the Cal.P453/3B is concentrated in this small mechanism: here is the source of the quiet accuracy Vacheron kept hold of through changing times.

Fancy lugs, added later by a watchmaker whose name is now lost, carry into the modern wrist the dignified resonance of a pocket watch drawn from a gentleman's breast pocket.

The gold hunter case was made not only to protect the hour but for the special ritual of facing time.

Even within Vacheron Constantin's nearly 270 years of history, an example that embodies classical aesthetics to this degree is rare.

We were told that a full official service by Vacheron Constantin would require every part to be made again from scratch, and so we chose not to restore it, in order to keep the breath of its own time.
