A 1950s Universal Genève Polerouter — the watch that pulled the trigger on the race toward slimness — has arrived.

In good aged condition.

The black mirror dial shines like a starry sky, and does so best in daylight.

Cross lines on the dial create a well-judged density.

Against that composure, the case takes a fancier direction, with twisted lugs.

The date window is trapezoid, which speaks for care over design.

This playfulness that never overdoes it is very much of the 1950s.

A well-judged thickness that settles at a shirt cuff must have made it a dependable companion for the professionals of its day.

The Polerouter is the slim watch that brought still greater fame to Universal Genève, a house already celebrated for chronographs.

Its design was the work of Gérald Genta, then 23 years old.

It first appeared in 1954, released to mark the launch of Scandinavian Airlines' service to America.

The name comes from the fact that the route crossed the North Pole.

The original pet name was Polarrouter, soon changed to Polerouter.

This example carries the Cal.215-2, the micro-rotor that became Universal's byword and that improved on the winding efficiency which had been the micro-rotor's weakness.

Look at the small dimple in the crystal through a loupe and you will find a "U" for Universal Genève, which confirms it as a period part.

After talk of Breitling acquiring Universal Genève, the story turned: a Polerouter revival model was announced.

The new release is scheduled for autumn 2026, and it is well worth watching what comes next.
