— Elegance from a Swiss house —
Gübelin has been proposing the finest things from Lucerne since 1854, and this is one of the timepieces it made that outlasted its period: a 1950s vintage alarm clock in a rounded, likeable form, dressed in deep burgundy enamel.
— Eight days of life —
"8 DAYS 15 JEWELS" is printed on the dial. Unlike an ordinary table clock, one winding keeps it running accurately for a full eight days. The hand-wound movement is generously fitted with 15 jewels — the record of what a Swiss craftsman was prepared to put into it.
The comfortable tick of a mechanical clock does a good deal for a quiet room.
— A civilised way to be woken —
This small object also has an alarm. The nostalgic brass key and knob on the back have a satisfying action, and setting them becomes one of those small daily rituals.
— For a desk, or a bedside —
Small conical gold feet support the clock neatly and rather gallantly. On a study desk it reads as an intelligent accent; beside a bed it changes the character of waking up.
