A masterpiece that left a considerable mark on Japanese watchmaking in the early 1950s: the first Japanese watch to establish the centre-seconds layout in earnest, at a time when small seconds was still the rule.

Look down at the dial and the modern refinement of the 1950s is all there. Concentric circles around the edge like a record, glittering raised markers, and Art Deco numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9. The alpha hands are sharp and yet somehow warm.

The pale champagne-gold patina that the years have produced tells the story of seventy-odd years rather beautifully.

Open the case back and there is the world of Japanese manufacturing at its origin. "SEIKOSHA THREE 3 ADJUSTED" stamped deep into the bridge shows the three-position adjustment that marked a high-grade watch at the time.

Perfectly meshed wheels, and a balance still swinging strongly: the ambition of watchmakers who had decided to take on the world.

The case is stainless steel (a 1755 case), the high-grade specification of the day. Small, and yet it makes itself felt once it is on the wrist.
