— A century of time marked —
A pocket watch born in Saint-Imier while the world was caught up in the roaring twenties.
A century on, it still carries the honesty of a tool and a universality beyond its own era.
— Balance drawn by Art Deco —
The two-tone dial carries an amber patina born of the years, with the depth of an old book.
Arabic numerals in an Art Deco face; cathedral hands that, thoroughly burnt, still reflect a dull blue.
Both hold the modern proportion particular to the 1920s and carry that period's taste directly into the present.
— The pride of Longines at its peak: Cal.17.95M —
A beautiful movement, with sixteen blue sapphire jewels.
The Cal.17.95M, produced by Longines through the 1920s and 30s, is one of the masterpieces among the firm's pocket watch movements.
A robust construction with carefully bevelled bridges speaks for the accuracy and durability Longines was pursuing then.
What deserves particular note is that the teeth of the barrel wheel were bevelled one by one, by hand, and then polished.
It is a level of finishing mass production could never reproduce: by working each tooth individually, the craftsman reduced friction and made the transmission of power smoother.
— A constant beauty that sits in the palm —
Take the substantial stainless steel case into your hand and something of the satisfaction the gentlemen of that era must have felt returns, quietly.
More than a timekeeper: a vintage piece with the value of culture, handed down across generations.
