CITIZEN Challenge Timer Ref.4-901193K, 1977

— 1977, with the heat of the golden years —

The Challenge Timer was Citizen's ambitious entry into the world market in the 1970s. Known affectionately as the "bullhead", its shape suggests the horns of a fighting bull.

This example was made in September 1977 — a piece from the moment when mechanical watches were burning at their brightest with quartz already audible in the distance.

— A vertical clutch —

Citizen's celebrated automatic chronograph calibre 8110A, with a flyback function that carries one measurement straight into the next. The vertical clutch construction gave nothing away to the luxury chronographs of the time, and nearly fifty years on the beat is still accurate.

— A calendar from elsewhere —

Black sub-dials on a gold dial in the panda arrangement. The vertical windows carry a scarce Arabic-script day disc — evidence that this watch crossed the sea and was worn in another country.

Even the fine marks on the case are part of the record of the journey it has made since 1977.

A mesh bracelet that follows the wrist, and a horned case with considerable presence.
