Neat Arabic indices standing out against a black dial. Rhythm Time, released by Citizen in the 1960s, is a scarce piece that does what its name says: it keeps an agreeable tempo through the day.

It was originally made for schoolchildren, and yet it carries a high-grade specification — a beautiful 17-jewel movement finished in red copper plating, known among collectors as the "red movement".

The soft character particular to antiques, calculated legibility and a minimal kind of beauty give it a quiet presence on a modern wrist.

"PARA WATER" is printed at six o'clock: the mark of the pride Citizen earned in 1959 as the pioneer of the first fully water-resistant watch made in Japan.

"17 JEWELS" is stamped alongside "CITIZEN". Carefully oiled and still lively, the red hand-wound movement is the clearest evidence of how far its makers pushed both usefulness and beauty.
